Making A Mockery of People’s Suffering PDF Print E-mail

10 March - Kee (not her real name) was 15 years old when it happened – the great water disruption in 1998 - a 150-day water rationing exercise between April and September. Low water level in dams early in the year was attributed to the 1997-98 El Nino and major events that year.

Kee had to compromise her schedule for her PMR exam. Every day she had to prepare bucket and pails and any container she could lay her hand on to collect water when and if the water tanker comes. Her mother runs a food stall and the water disruption really messed up their income during that period not to mention their daily lives. Her grandfather suffered a stroke and was bed ridden and her neighbor runs a day care services for children of single mothers and for lower income families where both parents have to work. All of them had an experience they will never forget and even thinking about the situation 16 years ago sends shivers down Kee’s spine.

“It was really traumatizing – your whole day revolves around ensuring we are all ready when the tanker comes. We did not have time for anything else including my studies” says Kee.

BY YUEN MEIKENG

PETALING JAYA: The level at the Sungai Selangor dam – the state’s largest – has touched the 70% mark but water experts say there is no reason for Klang Valley folk to celebrate just yet.

Climate change will affect water supply PDF Print E-mail

BY FAZLEENA AZIZ - 23 NOVEMBER 2014

KUALA LUMPUR: CLIMATE change will affect all water-related sectors, including water supply and agriculture, resulting in drought, flood and degradation of coastal ecosystem.

National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malaysia’s (Nahrim) Extension Study of the Impact of Climate Change on the Hydrologic Regime and Water Resources of Peninsular Malaysia shows there will be an increase in rainfall magnitude and intensity in the future.

“Global warming will affect peak flow, causing more extreme floods at river basins in the country, such as those in Johor, Kedah and Perak, as well as in Sabah and Sarawak.

“On the other hand, the decrease in monthly river flow and shifting of dry spells at river basins, such as Padas and Kinabatangan in Sabah, Limbang and Sadong in Sarawak, and Muda in Kedah, will affect future water availability.

In commemoration of World Toilet Day 2014 PDF Print E-mail

2014 has been a roller coaster year for most of us in Malaysia as we are being struck by the rare drought and also water crisis in most of the states in peninsular Malaysia. Some of the major disruptions were caused by untreated sewerage that flowed into the rivers and forced water treatment plants to shut down.

While the finger-pointing game is still happening, we have yet to truly realise the importance of the connection between water and sanitation.

In 2010, the United Nations had passed a resolution which stated that access to water and sanitation is one of the most important rights for the realisation of all human rights. Water and sanitation must be given equal priority by all stakeholders! Thus, in order to increase the awareness on the importance of a sound sanitation, the United Nation has gazetted Nov 19 as World Toilet Day.

Climate Change, is it too late for us to act? PDF Print E-mail

[Play Video HERE]

In its latest report, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, IPCC, has warned that the planet is under increasing climatic disruption. The IPCC says the impact will only worsen if nations worldwide do not deal properly and urgently with climate change.

The report also says Earth is facing extreme weather conditions, from rising sea levels to melting ice. The UN panel insists only a global effort to cut emissions with a short period of time, will prevent temperatures from crossing a level that scientists say could lead to more dangerous climate disruptions.

The findings of the report are seen as a last chance for policy makers to reach a legally binding deal on climate change, before a landmark summit next year in Paris.

So, is it too late to reverse the effects of climate change?
